Black Jadeite
Black Jadeite plays an important role in the jadeite artifacts. There is a trade jargon "Green follows black and black accompanies green". If the black color is caused by amphibole then the jadeite will be opaque and the value will be discounted. If teh black color is caused by the presence of CR3 then the value will not be affected as under a strong light from behind the jadeite, the green color is still distinctive. It the black color is mainly caused by omphacite then it has a wellknown trade name known as Chinese Ink Jadeite.
Chinese Ink Jadeite looks black outwardly; the darker the better. However if you place a strong light from behind, you can see the original green vividly. The tranparency will be better off if the texture of the jadeite is very fine, and it can command a good price. Most of the Chinese Ink Jadeite are produced by craftmen from Rui Li in Yunnan province of China.
As the craftmen are not constrained by the final size and the transparency of the jadeite, they concentrate their effort in presenting the minute details of the master pieces. Hence the standard of carving is the best in all jadeite artifacts.
Chinese Ink jadeite are valued on the quality of the jadeite and its cutting. And they are mostly unpolished; only focal points in the jadeite will be highly polished to make them stand out.(for instance, the eyes of the money god). As Chinese Ink jadeite show masculine characteristics, they are are well liked by male Chinese.
