Value Jadeite
To value jadeite correctly we need to work under certain conditions, amongst them the right light source, suitable background, appropriate contrasting items and proper mood. And we have to carry out analysis on its genuity, transparency, color, cut and overall presentation.

Normally we should look at the jadeite under natural light where possible, failing which a 100 watts table lamp will also do.When this cannot be done, then a handy pen light may do the job too. We need to observe the internal structure of the jadeite first. This is how we observe a jadeite bangle. Hold it under the light and turn the bangle one round to observe whether it has any cracklines. Most of the jadeite will look nicer under the light, therefore we should try to view it under the natural light.
To value the jadeite, the color of the background is very important. The standard way is to use a white background to view the jadeite. Pea species of jadeite will look better under white background, because the white inclusions will not be very obvious and we might not detect the flaws. Likewise, green jadeite will look even greener under the white background.
On a black background, a high quality jadeite will look even more transparent. That is why when the seller wants to show you a good quality piece of jadeite, he will use a black background. Black background will also be used when the color of the jadeite is biased towards darker tone. For our untrained eyes, we will miss the flaw in color under black background; and will not miss it if it is observed under a white background. Many buyers have fallen into this trick.

After we are shown many pieces of jadeite that are of a lower quality in terms of colors, shapes, and transparency, then we are shown one that is slightly better, we tend to overvalue the better one. This is why many buyers have been conned to pay too much for the jadeite. In short, we may be misled to believe that the jadeite is better if we are shown a lot of inferior pieces in the first place.
